English vs Japanese Pokémon Cards: Which Singles Should You Collect?
Share
One of the most common questions we get from Filipino collectors: should I buy English or Japanese Pokémon cards? Both are 100% authentic from The Pokémon Company — here’s how they differ so you can pick what suits you.
Card quality
Japanese cards are widely regarded as having slightly crisper print quality and are more prone to arriving in pristine, gradeable condition. English cards are the standard for most players in the region and for official tournament play.
Price & availability
Japanese singles are often cheaper for the same Pokémon, especially commons, uncommons and bulk ex cards — great value if you love the art but don’t need English text. English chase cards can command a premium. Browse both sides here: English singles and Japanese singles.
Set structure
English and Japanese sets don’t line up one-to-one. A single Japanese set is often split across multiple English sets (and vice-versa), so card numbers differ between the two. That’s why we list them as separate products with their own set and number.
Which should you choose?
- Playing in English tournaments? Stick with English singles.
- Collecting for the art, or chasing value? Japanese singles are hard to beat — often the same Pokémon for less.
- Just want the card? Buy the printing you like best — both are authentic and both ship sleeved, PH-wide.
